We are just a month into the summer of 2019. Although the temperatures are hot, it’s been cool to spend some time with my son on his quest to compete at the next level in athletics. He has been playing football since the 4th grade and will be entering his junior year of high school in the fall. He was fortunate enough to be invited to several elite college football camps this summer. His high school 7 on 7 team qualified for a trip to the Texas State Championships this past weekend as well. Their team fell short of wining the championship, but it was a great experience!
Although he has the size and skills to compete with these top level athletes, the probability of playing in the NCAA or the NFL is still pretty slim. Only about 1 in 17, or 5.8% of high school senior players will go on to play in the NCAA. Only about 1 in 50, or 2% of NCAA senior players will be drafted to an NFL team. High school senior players eventually drafted by an NFL team are about 9 in 10,000, or .09%. That is the probability you will have an IQ above 150, as measured by the Stanford-Binet test.
What is the difference maker for the players that do make it to the next level? In addition to some natural athletic ability, it is absolutely coaching, position specific training and attitude. When I listened to the coaches talking to their squad after coming off the field, there was no blame or negativity about what mistakes may have been made. It was all about coaching the players up, learning from their experience and discussing how to apply it when they get back on the field. When they are not competing in a game, top level athletes are focused on training for their specific job and the mechanics of performing the job at the highest level possible.
If you are expecting your team to perform at the highest level possible and are not providing positive coaching and regular position specific training for them, the chances of taking your business to the next level is pretty slim!
